The silver filigree craft of Odisha, locally known as tarakasi, has a history spanning over 500 years, with strong roots in Mughal-era artistry. Cuttack, often called the “Silver City of India,” is the epicenter of this craft. It involves weaving ultrathin silver wires into lace-like patterns, creating lightweight yet durable designs. Artisans shape these wires into intricate motifs inspired by Odisha’s flora, fauna, and temple architecture. Items range from jewelry, utensils, and ceremonial artifacts to decorative pieces for festivals, especially for the idols of Lord Jagannath during Rath Yatra.
Historically, silver filigree was patronized by royal families and temple authorities, making it a symbol of prestige. The craft gained further prominence during colonial times when it was showcased in international exhibitions. Today, while traditional methods are still followed, artisans face challenges like high raw material costs and a lack of modern marketing. However, global interest in handmade and culturally significant crafts has helped revive this delicate art, making it a cherished heritage symbol.
